I have some really great clients right now. I was thinking happy thoughts about them today, and it occurred to me that the great ones all have one thing in common: they’re looking for the kind of edit I give.
A good edit is encouragement woven through a solid path to improvement. Some writers are simply looking for the encouragement bit. They’re looking for professional validation that they’re good at the writing thing. When all you’re expecting is encouragement, that solid path to improvement can be quite a shock. Offensive, even. That’s an unpleasant surprise for both of us.
My favorite clients are the ones who come to me saying, “I need someone to help me get to the next level. Tell me what muscles to build up.” Hell yes, I can do that. And I will absolutely encourage you along the way.
